DARTS: GEORGE Caldwell fired in a nifty 16-dart leg of log-end 301 in helping his Blue Bell team to beat Alliance 4-3 in the Cheetham Hill and District League.

The surprise of the week came when newcomers Crown and Cushion beat reigning champions Grove 4-3.

The Openshaw Log-End League’s combined darts and crib House Knockout quarter-finals brought wins for Railway, Halfway House, Clayton Con Club and Royal Oak.

Lord Nelson A went clear at the top of the Ardwick Mixed League with their 6-1 defeat of Gardeners Arms.

Stanley Street WMC A went down by the odd game in seven to Royal Oak, but the Stanley B team beat Bridge Inn 6-1.

Higher Blackley Con Club suffered their first defeat in four matches when they went down 5-2 to Gardeners in the Middleton Thursday League.

Charlestown extended their decent start to the season with a 4.5-2.5 win at the Duke of Wellington, while Grove, who have a couple of games in hand, beat Woodside WMC 5-2.

Of the players who participated in four or more matches in division one of the Greater Manchester Super League during the summer, John Downs (Blackley VASA) topped the averages with a mean score of 73.17.

Peter Ward (Newton Heath) was in second place with 71.20, while Mark Holden and Terry Hey (both Blackley Grove) were third and fourth, with 69.46 and 67.36 averages respectively.

Other north Manchester players in the top 10 were Tony Poole (Newton Heath) and Dave Cullen (Blackley VASA).

Mark Holden, Dave Cullen, John Kurpas (Newton Heath) and Mark Smith (Blackley VASA) all hit three 180s during the season.
