CHEETHAM Hill CC leapfrogged Denton St Lawrence CC to go top of the Lancashire County League with a tense victory over local rivals Prestwich CC on Saturday.
Batting first. Hill struggled to a disappointing 116 all out with only I Mirza (33) offering any of the application required against a strong bowling side. In reply Prestwich looked in control at 100 for five cruising to victory.
However, a diving catch low down in front of him from Y Anwar of the stand in captain M Ali’s (1-36) bowling and a run out next over swung the momentum back in Hills direction as the pressure started to grow on Prestwich.
At this point Hill brought man of the match I Mirza (6-29) back on to bowl, who after taking three wickets in his first spell, he took three more for no runs to win the match by bowling the Prestwich captain ,sparking of widespread celebrations at the club.
This victory, coupled with Denton St Lawrence losing, puts Hill one point clear with just five matches to go in the league.
