Champion through after scare

NO sooner had this year’s Rochdale Observer Golf Tournament started than one of the stalwarts of the competition went out.

Roger Carter (North Manchester) has entered every year since the contest started, and usually won through to the later stages.

But this time round he made a first-round exit, though it took two extra holes before he was vanquished by Blackley’s Steven Shaw.

A round further on and Brian Kynaston (North Manchester) handed out an early warning with a 7 and 6 victory over Manchester’s Peter Riley.

Peter Caine (Springfield) beat club-mate Don Fenton by the same margin.

Bryn Tootell (Tunshill) was more than happy with his one up win over Whittaker’s Ian Black who had twice won the Rose Bowl in past years.

Trophy holder Clive Turner got something of a scare when he met Springfield’s Nigel Grimshaw up on the Bacup course. But he emerged victorious at the 19th.

Peter Lane beaten in last year’s final, overcame Mark Cockcroft (North Manchester) at the 18th.

The big clash of the round was at Whittaker where Darrell Kernick met club-mate Peter Davies.

Davies won one up and will now go to Rochdale to face past Rose Bowl winner Lee Rogers in what is probably the top match of round three.

Games in round three must be played by Monday 14 July and all results submitted by that date.

Contestants should note that the handicap rule of three-quarters of the difference no longer applies. Full handicaps must now be respected and shots given accordingly.
