IT WAS certainly match of the day - Stockport Junior Blues, top of the Tameside League’s Under 17s Division, against second placed Manchester Youth, with a place in the last eight of the cup at stake.

The game lived up to all the hype in the early stages, with high tempo quality football played by both teams.

The deadlock was broken by Manchester. Jack Lyons beat the keeper to a high ball and made it 1-0.

It became 2-0 on 27 minutes. A long throw from Curtis Williams was headed on by Jack Lyons and Sam Freakes ghosted in at the far post to volley home.

Right on half time Stockport pulled one back.

The game began to get a bit tense, but a succession of chances fell to the Manchester forwards.

A shot from Lyons was blocked on the line, a follow up shot from Jamie Mack was saved, Reeves’ rebound shot was blocked, and another effort from Wolden was blocked on the line before the ball was tapped in by Lyons.

Toby Iloba made it 4-1 from a Wolden cross, and Stockport’s late second was no more than a consolation.
