Double for Quigg and Roberts

25/ 7/2008

COLLYHURST and Moston’s promising youngsters Scott Quigg and Rhys Roberts took another step on the road to stardom with notable wins at the weekend.

Quigg faced a moment of truth when he was matched with the experienced Peter Allen from Birkenhead at the Liverpool Olympia on Saturday.

Allen, with over 40 professional bouts under his belt and having fought all the top bantam, feather and lightweights in the British Isles, went into the bout with a reputation of very rarely being stopped. As the introductions were being made, the Birkenhead campaigner looked across the ring at the baby-faced 19-year-old and smirked.

Less than three minutes later, poor Allen was being rescued by the referee after being decked twice from dynamic right hands from Quigg. The Collyhurst and Moston boxer was punch perfect as he accurately drilled two-handed combinations into Allen with lightning-fast speed.

Nobody expected such a sudden finish and as Allen got to his feet after the second knockdown on wobbly legs, the referee wisely draped his arms around him and led him to his corner. It was a brilliant victory for the vastly improving Quigg.

Roberts scored his fifth successive victory when he boxed superbly to outpoint the bigger, heavier Sid Razak from Birmingham.

It was text-book boxing from the young featherweight. Razak was trying to use his longer reach and heavier punches, but Roberts never gave him a moment’s rest. His jabbing and combination punching was a sight to behold. The large Liverpool crowd applauded him warmly and enjoyed Roberts’ style of quick-silver boxing. There was no doubt who the winner was at the end of the four three minutes rounds.

MIDDLETON boxer Matthew Hall is in line for an English title clash with Andrew Facey in September.
