Sportcity wins super-casino bid

30/ 1/2007

THE Sportcity complex will become the home of Britain's first Las Vegas-style super-casino.

The Casino Advisory Panel this morning made the surprise announcement that the Manchester bid had beaten off challengers from favourites Greenwich and Blackpool to be be awarded the licence to build a venue for up to 1,250 unlimited-jackpot fruit machines.

The proposed regional casino site will also contain an entertainment complex with a range of facilities such as a multi-purpose arena, a swimming pool, an urban sports venue, restaurants, bars, a nightclub and a hotel.

Promoters in Manchester argued that the Sportcity scheme in Beswick met the criteria for social responsibility by establishing a community trust to independently scrutinise the operations.

It is estimated the casino will create 2,700 direct and indirect jobs in one of the most deprived parts of the country which has a track record in delivering major regeneration schemes.

Promoters believe the casino is guaranteed commercial success at the heart of the city with a catchment area population of three million and one of the busiest tourist bases in the UK.

This is fantastic news for Manchester but mostly for the communities of east Manchester who will and should benefit greatly with the creation of new employment opportunities, a chance to socialise at a higher level and environmental improvements to the area making East Manchester a more desirable place to live work and play. The young people of East Manchester have now got hope for a brighter better future. We hope Newton Heath being part of the central constituency, which according to the results of recent research by the Save the Children has the highest percentage of children living in poverty in the whole of Gt Britain will gain from this development by way of an influx of new employment, better public transport and the creation of confidence and pride in our great city.
