More cash for St Peter's
Annette Lord22/12/2006
ST PETER'S High is in line for a facelift in another wave of funding for Manchester schools.
Already, cash through the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme is being spent on creating new joint sites for Cedar Mount High School, Gorton, with Melland special school, and Our Lady's High School, Blackley, with Meade Hill special school.
State-of-the-art facilities are also at planned at St Matthew's in Moston, plus Abraham Moss and King David high schools in Crumpsall.
Now the city council has been given the green light for further cash from the BSF fund.
It will be months before councillors know exactly how much they have to spend but already they have seven schools are on the hit list for new buildings and facilities - including St Peter's. Construction work would begin in 2008.
BSF is part of a government aim to rebuild or renew every secondary school in England over a 10-15 year period.
Councillor Jeff Smith, executive member for children's services, said: "This is fantastic news for our schools and our plans to transform education in Manchester. It is a real vote of confidence in the council's ability to deliver our ambitious school building programme.
"Improving our school buildings is a crucial element in the regeneration of the city and we will be working closely with schools and local communities to make sure that as many people as possible benefit from this."
