Recalling the good old days

10/10/2008

TO MARK the end of a vibrant exhibition looking into the last two centuries at Belle Vue a local historian is offering an afternoon of nostalgia next Friday.

Historian Brian Selby will be giving a one-off talk about what was once one of the North West's premier tourist attractions.

Belle Vue Remembered: An afternoon of nostalgia, will take place on the final day of the exhibition, from 1pm - 4pm at Manchester Central Library.

Brian will share interesting anecdotes and facts about the Belle Vue of yesteryear and will display more items from his own fascinating personal collection of memorabilia.

There will then be the opportunity to meet and talk to people who used to work at Belle Vue and to share memories of happy days spent enjoying the park's many attractions including the fairground, outdoor dancing, Saturday night speedway, firework displays and gardens.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure at Manchester City Council said: "Due to the popularity of the exhibition and its subject matter we are offering this fascinating talk free of charge to give people further opportunity to remember and reminisce on a bygone era and learn more about Belle Vue both as a leading tourist attraction and as an important part of the city's social history."

The exhibition, Belle Vue's Back in Town features an astonishing collection of original posters, postcards, circus programmes, zoo guides, souvenirs and other artefacts.

Light refreshments will be provided and the event is free of charge although people are advised to reserve a place, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

To reserve a place contact Steve Willis at Central Library on 0161 234 1903.
