Red means stop

TRAFFIC calming measures may be implemented at a Harpurhey puffin crossing after years of lobbying.

Trinity and District Residents Association has been calling for action to be taken on the Moston Lane/Dalbeattie Street crossing, which they say is frequently plagued by drivers jumping the red light.

Now the council have proposed to install a 20mph 'School Zone' along part of the road, after Trinity chairman Stephen Holt wrote to Councillor Richard Cowell, executive member for the environment.

If the scheme is approved, it will be implemented at the end of this year.

Mr Holt said he was happy with the initiative, but vowed to put more pressure on the council if the situation remained the same.

"We're using the 'slowly slowly catch the monkey' technique," he said. "We'll see how this works, and if it doesn't, it'll be back to the council again."

A council spokesman said: "Subject to approval and public consultation, we are proposing to install an advisory 20mph school zone along Moston Lane between the supermarket entrance and Upper Conran Street, later in the year.

"The scheme would comprise advisory 20mph and 'school zone' signs and red carriageway markings to warn people to slow down as they enter the 20mph zone.

"Any worn carriageway markings would be reinstated at the same time".

The association initially tried to get a traffic-monitoring camera installed at the crossing in 2005 when it presented councillors with a petition.

However, the council told Mr Holt that there would have to be a record of collisions at the crossing before it could highlight it as a priority.
