They’re the clean-up kids . . .

A PROJECT has been launched in Clayton, Openshaw and Beswick to try and encourage young people in the area to take more pride in their community.

Litter picking, gardening, cleaning and sweeping are among the activities undertaken by the Eastlands Homes Task Teams, which are made up of six to 12-year-olds.

"This is a really exciting project," said Sheila Doran, Chief Executive of Eastlands Homes.

"Local children are enthusiastic about getting stuck in and they're making a real difference."

Twenty seven children have so far signed up to the project, which was launched in April.

Sheila added: "These young people should be proud of themselves - they have thrown themselves into the tasks and have achieved some impressive results."

Each Tuesday a different team of nine children hit the streets between 5pm and 7pm to participate in various tasks.

Anyone who shows good behaviour and completes a set number of tasks is then rewarded with a visit to places such as the cinema, bowling or theatre.

Many local residents have praised the children, who they say are making a real difference in their area.

Cath Fothergill, a Clayton resident, said: "I saw the Task Team on our street and I have to say that the kids have done a fantastic job cleaning it up."

Help is on hand during the tasks from Eastlands Homes staff, adults from the local community and neighbourhood wardens.
