Pedal power

LOCAL Scouts are motoring after being handed £250 for their community work.

The 105th Manchester St Peter's group has received the cash towards its community fundraising efforts and to also help maintain a pedal car the scouts use to race in national competitions.

The cash came from construction firm George Wimpey Manchester, which launched a community investor scheme two months ago to give local good causes a financial boost.

People were asked to write in to the Advertiser to nominate an individual or group they felt was worthy of the money.

Deputy editor Annette Lord said: "We had lots of great entries and there were some fantastic causes which all deserved support. It was really difficult to whittle it down to four winners."

St Peter's Scouts were nominated by 11-year-old member Joseph Powell, who wrote: "Every year we take part in the national pedal car race and this year we are entering the British one. Our pedal cars cost a very lot of money to build. To replace the tyres and chains on the day is also quite expensive.

"We as a group also work all year to help our community. We do a lot in Blackley Forest and St Peter's Church."

Leader Gary Hollingsworth said: "I was delighted to hear the news that we were both nominated and selected to receive this donation.

"The Scouts as a whole do a fantastic job within the local community and putting some of the money towards their pedal car is just reward for their efforts."

Anita Williams from George Wimpey Manchester added: "I am delighted that a scout group was nominated as they are often overlooked despite the great work they do supporting charities and worthy community causes.

"Developments such as Northgate are very much community orientated, something that is perfectly reflected in the attitude and the actions of the local scouts."

Northgate is George Wimpey Manchester's new development off Waterloo Street, Crumpsall, where a new Cranage show home has just opened.
