Carnival capers

A TASTE of Egypt came to Crumpsall Park on Sunday thanks to the Manchester Museum.

Sadly this didn't include any North African weather, as the Mancunian rain left attendees reaching for their wellies.

But a display of Ancient Egyptian artefacts was one of many highlights at the 11th annual Crumpsall Carnival.

Others included Egyptian dancers, cheerleaders, a children's entertainer and a samba band helping to keep the 2,000 attendees happy.

Lord Mayor Mavis Smitheman opened the event and awarded the children’s ‘best fancy dress’ prize to Louie Smith-Orrego for his Egyptian outfit.

Later, members of the Abraham Moss Theatre Group took to the stage to entertain the audience with a set of swing numbers and songs from their production of Disney's 'High School Musical'.

Not to be outdone, Northern Air Hospital Radio's talent competition winner, Hayley Smith from Harpurhey, hit the mic to serenade the crowds, as did the contest's runners up.

In addition, there was a wide range of stalls and a football tournament organised by the city council's sports development team.

Entertainment co-ordinator and compere Dave Bee said: "It was very wet to start with but that didn't dampen anyone's spirits.

"The park was full up by the time the sun came out and a great day was had by all."
