Plea to drivers after son hit by car

A CAMPAIGNING mum is calling for speed humps to be installed outside her home after her three-year-old son was hit by a car.

Jay Gaynord spent three days in Booth Hall hospital with a broken leg after running into the road while playing with friends last Monday.

Now mum Linda Donohoe, 39, is calling for traffic calming on Eagar Street, Newton Heath, following the accident and a number of 'near misses'.

She said: "Since Wynsors shoe shop opened, the traffic has been absolutely mad.

"Fortunately the car that hit Jay wasn't going that fast but some do, particularly vans. Some of them come up the street like it's a motorway.

"In the street we are all sick of asking people to slow down. Jay isn't the only one to have been knocked down in the last few years and fortunately they have not been hurt. There have been a lot of near misses.

"When he's out playing I can't settle. My heart is in my mouth all the time."

The support worker at North Manchester General Hospital, who also has a 12-year-old son Dillon, has joined neighbours in putting up signs warning drivers that children might be playing and asking them to slow down.

She said: "I tried a few years ago to get road humps here but the council came at the wrong time of day to see what it was like and said they weren't needed."

She has now contacted Newton Heath councillor Damien O'Connor to see if something can be done.
