Police funeral for shot cop

27/ 6/2008

THE firearms cop shot when a training exercise went tragically wrong in Newton Heath is to receive a full police funeral.

A police escort, including mounted officers, will guide the funeral cortege from PC Ian Terry's home in Worsthorne, Burnley, for the service tomorrow (Friday).

There will also be a guard of honour along the path into the church.

The father-of-two, aged 32, was shot dead on 9 June during a training exercise by GMP's firearms unit at the disused Sharp factory on Oldham Road.

He was hit in the chest with an RIP (Round Irritant Personnel) round while playing the role of a fleeing criminal and was not wearing body armour.

The officer who fired the gun has not been suspended, but has been moved to other duties outside the firearms unit.

An investigation into the incident is being led by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
