Landlord ‘left furniture in the street’

27/ 6/2008

A LANDLORD has been ordered to pay more than £1,800 for dumping a pile of old furniture on the street.

Malik Gulam Sabir, trading as Mecca Properties in Heywood Street, Cheetham Hill, was fined £500 and ordered to pay £1,332.93 costs after pleading guilty to passing waste to an unauthorised carrier.

A council officer spotted piles of furniture dumped in the back yard of one of Sabir's properties, in Humber Street last December, and ordered for it to be removed.

When the officer returned in January, the rubbish - including a bed, mattress, sofa and wooden cabinets - had been dumped on the pavement of nearby Haley Street.

Councillor Paul Andrews, executive member for neighbourhood services, said: "It would have cost Mr Sabir only a couple of hundred pounds to have the rubbish removed legitimately but instead he thought he could get away with council tax payers picking up the tab.

"His careless disregard for Cheetham Hill's environment has resulted in this rubbish costing him nearly ten times as much as if he'd taken his legal responsibility for it in the first place. Environmental crime does not pay in Manchester.

"I am pleased that the magistrates have supported us in our stance and that tax payers have not had to pay a penny towards removing this waste. Our free bulky waste collection service is an excellent service for our residents but we will not tolerate it being abused by private landlords."
