Man killed in knife attack

POLICE have charged a man with murder after a knife attack in a Crumpsall street.

Thirty-nine year-old violinist Michael Kahan was found dying outside shops on Middleton Road at 10am on Sunday.

Witnesses say Mr Kahan, of High Clere Road, Crumpsall, and an exponent of Jewish klezmer music, had just left one of the shops after buying breakfast when he was attacked.

An off-duty doctor and nurse made a desperate attempt to revive him but he died from his wounds at North Manchester General Hospital.

A post mortem examination established that Michael died of stab wounds in the abdomen and chest.

A 31-year-old man, Jonathan Mills, of Dawlish Road, Chadderton, was charged with Mr Kahan's murder and was due to appear before Tameside magistrates yesterday (Wednesday).

A 48-year-old held on Sunday was bailed on Tuesday pending further inquiries.

Michael Kahan's wife Eva said: "Michael was a very kind, gentle and gifted man - he was just going to buy Sunday breakfast but he never came home.

"He had a great sense of humour, was very chatty and instantly likeable.

"He was simply a nice guy and we are devastated at what has happened. We just want to be left to grieve in peace."

Police are still appealing for witnesses to the stabbing to come forward.

Detective Superintendent Russ Jackson said: "We are following a number of lines of inquiry to establish what happened to this man, and why he was stabbed, but I need to urge anyone else who witnessed this murder to call police.

"We have spoken to some witnesses but believe there could be more people who saw what happened, and we need to speak to everyone.

"You might think the information you have is insignificant, but it could be vital."
