All hail St George!

THE SPIRIT of St George took Manchester by storm on Sunday, as thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate England's national day.

Belly dancers, pipe bands, brass ensembles and shire horses were among the 40 'floats' which braved the rain to converge on the city centre today as part of the annual St George's Day parade.

Around 4,000 spectators lined the streets to watch the procession led by Manchester's Lord Mayor Glynn Evans as it weaved its way from Varley Street, in Miles Platting to Piccadilly and back again.

The parade was given a civic send-off from Varley Street by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Glynn Evans at noon before making its way to Piccadilly Gardens which was led by characters in the costumes of Queen Victoria and Henry VIII.

Organisers attempted to raise as much money as possible for this year's chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation.

Organiser Thelma McGrail, said: "Apart from the rain it went really well, the downpour didn't ruin it.

"It was a great day and in the next couple of months we are hoping to present the British Heart Foundation with a cheque for the money that we raised on the day."

Councillor Christine Carroll, said: "This year’s St George's Day parade is simply the best.

"The rain did not dampen anyones spirits. Many thanks go out to the organisers, all those who took part and the many thousands who cheered along the route."
