Blears: 'Jobs will be forthcoming'

COMMUNITIES minister Hazel Blears insisted she was committed to providing jobs in east Manchester when she visited New Islington last Friday.

It was the first time she has returned to the area since the proposed supercasino was axed by the government in February.

The Salford MP was asked to draw up plans for alternatives to the venture, which was predicted to generate one-billion pounds a year and 3,000 jobs in the region.

But her reports failed to state any specific investments or suggest a firm commitment by the government to provide aid.

She now chairs a working group, involving government ministers and town hall chiefs, looking into other possible investments.

Speaking as fresh plans for housing in New Islington were announced, Ms Blears said that the group was "focused on how to make sure we can create an equal number of jobs to the supercasino."

"We are working really hard to ensure that the job opportunities are there," she added. "I made an interim report to parliament on our first meeting and my group will continue to work for the next year to find these opportunities.

"We believe many of the issues are around skills and helping people acquire skills."

During her speech at Urban Splash's unveiling of their future housing developments, the MP quoted Sir Robert Peel as she said: "What Manchester does today, the world does tomorrow."

Urban Splash, an award winning team of developers, announced a variety of ambitious projects to transform the former Cardroom estate.

These include a self-build scheme, called 'Tutti Frutti', which gives potential home-owners the opportunity to design and build their own houses on one of 20 canal side plots.

The group are in the process of introducing new structures to the 30 acre site, with plans for 1700 new homes, a new canal and water park, a school, and a health clinic all in the works.
