Drop in a tin ... oh yes you can!

30/11/2007

MAGICAL things happen when the Advertiser's Christmas Tin Appeal gathers pace.

And this year is no exception, as even pantomime's Ugly Sisters pledge their support.

Under the greasepaint these 'actors' may look a little familiar as they are none other than councillors Pat Karney, Joanne Green, Paul Fairweather and council leader Sir Richard Leese!

The quartet were more than happy to get into costume to help publicise the appeal, which will provide tinned and other non perishable foods for needy families this Christmas.

Councillor Leese is dashing as Buttons, Councillor Green is radient as Cinderella and Councillors Karney and Fairweather are ... well ... surprisingly handsome as Ugly Sisters.

Councillor Karney said: "Every year we are prepared to send ourselves up to boost the fantastic Advertiser tin appeal.

"We have a lot of needy families and old people in our area and the tin appeal makes the difference between a poor and a good Christmas. We urge everyone to give as much as they can."

He added, tongue firmly in cheek: "We are grateful that Sir Richard Leese was able to join us after Sir Cliff Richard said he was unavailable!"

Councillor Green also got into the spirit of the occasion, saying: "My ugly sisters are horrid but I am quite smitten with Buttons."

Sir Richard said: "The Advertiser tin appeal is an important contribution and something the Harpurhey councillors have supported for the last five or six years.

"I was asked if I would join in and it is for a good cause. It was fun."

Donations can be left at Asda Harpurhey, Asda Eastlands and Sainsburys Heaton Park, as well as the Advertiser office on Beswick Precinct, until 12 December.
