Natasha got cash from Amex - eventually

STUDENT Natasha Long from Somerset was left without access to vital funds while studying in the US, after American Express withdrew its Travellers Cheque Card.

American Express had warned customers that the card would be withdrawn, and that they would have to wait 10 to 12 weeks to get any remaining balance on their cards reimbursed.

The delay caused problems for Natasha, who needed the funds to continue her studies.

She said: "I was furious, because I'm living on a tight budget and trying to afford enormous tuition fees. I couldn't have lived without my money for 10 to 12 weeks."

Natasha complained to American Express about the delay, and it eventually agreed to pay her money into her bank account within 14 days.

American Express claimed that the 10 or 12 week delay was necessary, to allow any outstanding transactions on the cards to be processed.

If you're travelling abroad, make sure you have funds to fall back on if you have difficulty accessing your main source. Nationwide and Post Office credit cards are good options, as they don't charge fees for spending abroad.
