As far as contemporary songwriters go, there can be few as brave, nor as outspoken, as Conor Oberst.
In 2005, when the Nebraskan songwriter appeared on the American chat show Jay Leno, he unexpectedly premiered a new song. Entitled When the President Talks to God, it wasn’t a particularly generous tribute to the US government.
It’s such iconoclastic gestures which have confirmed 28-year-old Oberst as the poster boy of America’s disenfranchised youth. Listen to some music critics and they’d even have you believe Oberst is the closest thing to the new Bob Dylan. It’s probably too early to make Dylan comparisons just yet, but there’s no doubting Oberst’s incredibly prodigious and prolific work rate.
Under the moniker of Bright Eyes, he’s released 10 albums in as many years, each of them dazzling records which have covered genres from folk to electronica, and subject matter from tearful heartbreak to diatribes against the Iraq war.
Making his live return to Manchester this week, Oberst is promoting a new album Cassadega, another outstanding record which will surely fuel those ‘new Dylan’ tags.
